Anointed in the Ordinary

When we think of being anointed, we often picture something dramatic—oil poured out, a special title, or a big platform. But Joseph’s life shows us another side: sometimes we are anointed in the ordinary.

Joseph was sold into slavery and taken to Egypt. On the surface, it looked like his life had been reduced to nothing. Yet even there, God’s favor rested on him.

“The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant… The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.”
— Genesis 39:2–5

Even as a servant, Joseph carried God’s presence. Potiphar’s household flourished because Joseph was there.

Later, after being falsely accused, Joseph was thrown into prison. Once again, it looked like everything was falling apart. But God’s blessing followed him there too.

“But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.”
— Genesis 39:21

Joseph’s story reminds us: God’s anointing is not limited by our circumstances. You may feel stuck in an “ordinary” job, a difficult season, or a place you didn’t choose. But when you carry the Spirit of God, you bring blessing wherever you go.

Your workplace can flourish because of you. Your family can be strengthened because of you. Even in the hardest seasons, the Spirit of God makes your presence powerful.

You are anointed—even in the ordinary.

Reflection

What ordinary place in your life could God be using as a platform for His blessing? How can you shift your perspective to see His favor right where you are?

Prayer

Father, thank You that Your presence goes with me everywhere. Help me to see that even in ordinary or difficult places, I am anointed to bring blessing. Use me to shift the atmosphere in my workplace, my family, and my community. In Jesus’ name, amen.
