A Widow’s First Fruits: 1 Kings 17:18-16

Kings 17:8-14 (NASB77)
Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying,
“Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there; behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”
So he arose and went to Zarephath, and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks; and he called to her and said, “Please get me a little water in a jar, that I may drink.”
And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand.”
But she said, ” As the Lord your God lives, I have no bread, only a handful of flour in the bowl and a little oil in the jar; and behold, I am gathering a few sticks that I may go in and prepare for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.”
Then Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go, do as you have said, but make me a little bread cake from it first, and bring it out to me, and afterward you may make one for yourself and for your son.
“For thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘The bowl of flour shall not be exhausted, nor shall the jar of oil be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain on the face of the earth.’”

When Elijah the prophet declared that the judgment of God was going to bring a drought upon the nation he suffered the natural effects of the drought along with everyone else. This did not stop God from supernaturally providing for his servant and those who would care for him during this time of no rain. This should encourage everyone in the family of faith that God moves beyond the natural realms of economy. He is able to meet all of our needs in ways that are supernatural. He has created the principle of First Fruits for us to be able to see this happen in our lives. In this passage of scripture, we see that God saw a woman who was not an Israelite but she was someone that had a destiny in God. Elijah was glad to hear that God had “commanded a widow” to take care of him. Little did he know how bad her natural circumstances were when he arrived in her town. She was in a place that was so bad she thought she was about to cook her last meal before her and her son would die. What would you have done if you were Elijah seeing her in this state of poverty? Would you have looked for another widow? Would you have given her something instead of asking for her to “give first?” Elijah knew this woman needed supernatural help and he knew the principle of the First Fruits. When she gave to God first she opened the door for God to give her a continual supply that was she could not have accessed any other way. First Fruits is a principle everyone needs to tap into; especially those who are down to their last natural means. I encourage everyone to move beyond their natural circumstances and into a realm where God can command his supply to come into your life this year.
